Negotiations between congressional chambers are ahead.
The Senate Appropriations Committee narrowly voted to set 2024 defense funding at a higher number than that proposed by the House. The funding levels from the respective majorities in each chamber of Congress are 3 percent higher than current levels and fall within the spending caps agreed upon by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Members of the minority party in the Senate seek to increase defense funding beyond the cap.
Senate Appropriations Chair Patty Murray of Washington, though concerned by the lack of consensus between the parties and chambers, urged her committee members to move federal funding forward. Appropriations committee ranking member Senator Susan Collins of Maine said, “The new debt limit law caps regular defense funding in fiscal year 2024 at the inadequate level requested by the president” and that it “fails to meet the security challenges facing our nation.”
